Q. Do you believe in vampires?

E.S. - No, but then again, I’m not sure I haven’t dated a few. :)

Q. If there is a Vampire Kisses movie, who would you like to see play the parts of Alexander and Raven?

E.S. - When I originally wrote Vampire Kisses, I imagined a young Johnny Depp and a young Christina Ricci. Since then, I was in a mall with my husband and saw a poster for Prince Caspian and I said, “OMG! That’s Alexander!”

Now, I haven’t seen the movie (Prince Caspian) but have gotten emails from readers that had the same idea of Ben Barnes for Alexander. Other than him, I’m not sure. As far as Raven goes, I’ve never seen someone that I thought--that’s her! But I know there is someone out there! I thought maybe Ellen Page--same name as me!--but I think she’s starting to play adult roles now.

Q. If there is a vampire Kisses movie, can I audition and where?

E.S. - We are still in the very beginning part of the process. If it gets to that point, I’ll post what I know. As a former actress, I understand the hunger to play a role you feel destined to play.

Q. Is Kissing Coffins a real movie?

E.S. - No. I created it for Vampire Kisses 2--Kissing Coffins. But it does seem spooky and I would love to see it as a real film.

Q. How long will the series be?

E.S. - At this time, I am contracted for eight books. But who knows--I didn’t think there would be any after the first. :)

Q. Are the stories in the manga different from the novels?

E.S. - Yes. Same characters, but linear stories. You don’t have to wait to finish the novels before reading the manga. They can be read at the same time without any confusion. And you’ll get to meet Claude, Alexander’s sexy and menacing cousin.

Q. Will there be a sequel to Teenage Mermaid?

E.S. - I’d like to write one someday, but at the moment I’m writing Vampire Kisses novels and mangas. And of course, there are those other novels I’ve begun writing...

Q. Why do the books take so long to come out? Can you write faster?

E.S. - I do write fast! But there are a lot of behind the scenes goings on that the reader doesn’t see. First they are in hardback and HarperCollins wants these books to come out once a year. There are fabulous editors, copyeditors, cover designers and they all need time to get their part done. So you can see it takes a while to publish them.

Q. Why is the model on The Coffin Club different from the other books?

E.S. - Raven grew up! The first model and photographer are from France. And though the books take place over a year, the publication dates are once a year. So the original Raven is probably off to college! Now we have an American model--so the editor can actually attend the photo-shoot.

Q. Where did you find Raven’s dress on the cover of Dance with a Vampire?

E.S. - The editors wanted me to find a dress for Raven. I searched all over online and when we finally decided on one--it was in Australia and we didn’t have time to order it and have it shipped to France in time for the shoot. So it was back to a weekend of online window shopping and I finally found the perfect dress. It was shown in pink, but they had one available in blood red. To die for!!! You can find one here at http://www.jeannienitro.com/.

Q. Are Hello Batty and Olivia Outcast real?

E.S. - No. I made them up for the books. Some cute characters that Raven would adorn on her accessories. But I do have hopes that sometime they have their own story. Perhaps in the future...

Q. Since you were an actress, is Aunt Libby based on you?

E.S. - No, she’s actually a combo of my Aunt Esther and my long time friend in Chicago. Everyone should have an Aunt Esther. She’s really loving and kind and always into talking about my love life. My friend in Chicago is a totally hippie-girl. I think she’s Jim Morrison reincarnated.

Q. Where is Dullsville?

E.S. - Dullsville is a state of mind, really. My mind, anyway, when I wrote Vampire Kisses. It is not a real town, but I do get some ideas when I drive around. My mom grew up in a small town, so she gives me some ideas--like the spring carnival in Vampireville. Becky’s house (the exterior) is a few miles from me. But mostly, the ideas just pop in my head.

Q. Are you going to write another vampire series?

E.S. - I have already begun one. The characters are swirling in my head and I have more stories to tell. I write them down when I’m not writing Vampire Kisses.

Before I took pen to paper, I was an actress. I attended a local university majoring in theatre and spent a summer in London at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Arts where I learned about the “Old Bard” from amazingly talented teachers.

When I returned from London, I relocated to Chicago where I lived for five years. There, I graduated from the Second City Training Center and performed improv, Shakespeare, comedies and dramas--I even sang and danced on a cruise boat--without falling in Lake Michigan!  A classmate of mine from Second City and I created and performed a two woman show for a year before I braved it alone doing stand-up comedy. It was during this time I began to write an adult novel about a rock star--I had always enjoyed writing...

Fast forward a couple of years along with a move home where I was performing “stand-up” at comedy clubs in the area. On a plane to LA to decide my fate-- “to move to LA or not to move to LA” that is the question, my big bro, Mark, coincidentally with the same last name as mine (author of PRINCES IN EXILE, DREAMS OF THE SOLO TRAPEZE and STARCROSSED) handed me a young adult book he found at the library he thought I’d like to read during the flight.

As I read the book, I thought, ‘I can do this!’

I returned from LA, and instead of moving there, I wrote my story about the rock star as a young adult novel and called it JOHNNY LIGHTNING.
Mark, my writing mentor, edited JL for me. He was kind enough to send the manuscript to his publisher in Belgium--Facet--and they published it! In Dutch!

I was now on a new life path!

In 2001 HarperCollins made me an offer I couldn’t refuse! Not only was HarperCollins going to publish TEENAGE MERMAID, but it was in a language I could read and book stores I could walk into! HarperCollins also bought VAMPIRE KISSES and COMEDY GIRL.

It was a dream come true!

Since beginning my new life path, VAMPIRE KISSES, TEENAGE MERMAID, and MY MOTHER, THE CLOWN have been published by Facet in Belgium and JOHNNY LIGHTNING has been published in Germany by Ravensburger.

Then my fabulous editor at HarperCollins asked me for a sequel to VAMPIRE KISSES!
HarperCollins published  VAMPIRE KISSES 2--KISSING COFFINS and now the soon to be released VAMPIRE KISSES 3--VAMPIREVILLE. I am currently writing VAMPIRE KISSES 4!

When I'm not writing about the love affair between vampire obsessed, goth girl Raven and my favorite mysterious dark-eyed hottie, Alexander Sterling, I enjoy working on my other novels, shopping for Hello Kitty items, and attempting to gain control of the remote from my boyfriend.
